Anecdotes and curiosities about the famous Italian-American photographer who became a living legend

These days, at the AIPAD Photography Show in New York, one of the major international art fairs dedicated to photography, there is a white chair near the wall on which a living legend sits, the centenary Italian-American photographer Tony Vaccaro. Between one work and another, some visitors kneel before him to exchange a few words with him.

Tony is happy to tell anecdotes about his shots and take a selfie with his admirers.

He always sits in the same place and behind him there is a post-war photo taken in Venice. "One of my favorite images – explains the artist – I was walking in Venice after the end of the war, photographing the whole city. Suddenly I heard the violin playing. In the picture you do not see the man's daughter, she was three years old, and she was sitting next to him to collect the money of passers-by in a hat".

The AIPAD Photography Show brings together 49 galleries from 9 countries and 23 cities in the United States. NEW YORK – The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) has announced new dates and a new midtown Manhattan location for The Photography Show presented by AIPAD. The highly anticipated 41th edition will be held from May 19 through 22, 2022, at Center415 located on Fifth Avenue between 37th and 38th streets in New York City.  

More than 45 of the world’s leading galleries of fine art photography will present museum-quality work including cutting-edge contemporary, modern, and exemplary 19th-century photographs, as well as photo-based art, video, and new media, at the premier fine art photography fair. 

“After an absence of almost three years due to COVID-19, we can’t wait to reunite the global photography community in New York City for The Photography Show presented by AIPAD,” said Michael Lee, President of AIPAD and Owner of Lee Gallery, Winchester, Mass. “There is a great desire for photography dealers, collectors, curators and museum groups to finally gather again in front of the best in photography. We look forward to presenting a tightly focused member fair in a fresh venue in the middle of Manhattan and with dates that place AIPAD in the exciting art calendar in May.” 

The Photography Show, a vital part of New York City’s cultural scene and a must-see among fine art photography collectors, is the longest running exhibition dedicated to the photographic medium. The 2022 Show will feature leading galleries – all of whom are members of AIPAD – from across the U.S. and around the world, including Europe, Asia, Canada, and South America.

The 30th annual Association of International Photography Art Dealers Photography Show is now open, through Sunday, March 21. The show is at the Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue (between 66th and 67th Streets).

Friday's New York Times has a review of the show mentioning Eddie Adams iconic Street Execution of a Viet Cong Prisoner, shown in a very rare sequence of three prints. Also on exhibit at Monroe Gallery is the shocking burned master print of Robert F. Kennedy's assassination, as shown in this blog.

Monroe Gallery of Photography will be exhibiting at the AIPAD Photography Show March 18 - 21. Watch this blog for updates!

The longest running and one of the most important international photography events in the world, The AIPAD Photography Show will be presented by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) at the Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue (between 66th and 67th Streets).

More than 70 of the world's leading fine art photography galleries will present a wide range of museum-quality work including contemporary, modern and 19th century photographs, as well as photo-based art, video and new media, at the Park Avenue Amory in New York City. Monroe Gallery is located in Booth # 317, near the Cafe.

We will be exhibiting specially selected work from the gallery's collection of 20th and 21st Century masters, including the premiere of new work by Stephen Wilkes, and the first showing of the original master vintage print of Bill Eppridge's iconic image of busboy Juan Romero trying to comfort Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy after assassination attempt on June 5, 1968. Throughout the show we are honored that several of our photographers will be present in our booth, including Alyssa Adams, widow of the late Eddie Adams, Bill Eppridge, John Dominis,  John Filo, Guy Gillette (who is profiled in the current issue of Black & White magazine), John Loengard, Brian Hamill, Ken Regan, Steve Schapiro, Stephen Wilkes, and Barbara Villet, widow of the late Grey Villet. (We will present Grey Villet's work for the first time ever.)

The 30th edition of The AIPAD Photography Show New York will open with a Gala Preview on March 17 to benefit the John Szarkowski Fund, an endowment for photography acquisitions at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City (call 212-708-9680 for further information). Additional special events, seminars, and lectures are scheduled for Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21, including "A Conversation with Members of the Photo League" with Monroe Gallery photographers Vivian Cherry and Ida Wyman.
