Join Us For The City Of Santa Fe 2023 COVID-19 Memorial Day

12 Noon Monday, March 6, 2023, On The Santa Fe Plaza

The City of Santa Fe warmly invites all community members to attend the 2023 COVID-19 Memorial Day at 12 p.m. on Monday, March 6, 2023, on the Santa Fe Plaza. 

In February 2021, the Governing Body unanimously adopted a resolution designating the first Monday in March as COVID-19 Memorial Day. This event is held to remember all who have passed away, fallen ill, or who continue to suffer from the impact of COVID-19, as well as to honor essential workers. 

Citywide, Santa Feans are urged to participate in the memorial by observing a moment of silence at 12 p.m., and by adding their voices or noise to a moment of appreciation for essential workers at 12:01 p.m. (ringing bells at houses of worship, honking car horns, rounds of applause, etc.)

‘It is becoming unbearable:’ Journalists say they have become ‘scapegoats’ at anti-vaccine protests

Journalists covering demonstrations against COVID-19 countermeasures have been called “terrorists,” “pedophiles,” “murderers,” and “scumbags.” Protesters have harassed and assaulted members of the press, and told them that “the nooses are ready.”

Threats like these have become increasingly familiar for reporters in Europe and the United States, where the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, a CPJ partner, has recorded threats and assaults against reporters in cities including Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon. 

Full report here - “Being a journalist has always meant a certain level of risk,” Ambrožič said, “but the level of anxiety and stress due to the threats have increased enormously and it is becoming unbearable. It is a very harsh world for journalists, right now.”

4,882 photos taken over 30 hours. More than 670,000 flags representing American lives lost. An incalculable measure of grief.

For more than 30 hours, photographer and National Geographic Explorer Stephen Wilkes watched people move through the sea of white flags below him on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. He saw young children bend down curiously to examine the small flags, and cyclists lay down their bikes to take in the 20-acre expanse of them. He saw skateboarders roll through, selfie-takers frame shots—and passersby slowly realize that each flag represents a life lost to COVID-19.

On September 18 and 19, starting before sunrise and finishing after sunset, Wilkes took 4,882 photographs of the art installation In America: Remember, an exhibit that aims to convey the enormity of the country’s pandemic losses. He and his team then blended the photographs into a single composite image, part of his Day to Night series. 

“One of the things I tried to capture was the epic scale of this,” says Wilkes. “It’s almost impossible to take it all in.”

The pandemic shattered the city’s economy, affecting people’s homes, livelihoods and wallets. One photojournalist documented the hardships, as both a lament and a tribute.

"I needed to photograph our decimated economy in a way that brought the various elements to life — through the people living it.
