Stark comparisons of the traditional and the modern have informed the visualization of Native Americans from colonization to the present. Early contemporary Native photographer Horace Poolaw (1906–1984) created a dialogue with modernism through his adoption of composite narratives steeped in the cosmopolitan realism of the early 20th century.
