The Historic Hampton House Museum & Cultural Center just finished hosting “The Greatest Weekend,” a three-day inaugural festival to honor Muhammad Ali, Feb. 25-27.

The event commemorated the 58 years since Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, beat Sonny Liston in Miami Beach to win the world heavyweight championship title Feb. 25, 1964. Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali weeks later.

The night of his victory, although several hotels on Miami Beach clamored for him to celebrate his victory with them, Ali chose the Hampton House Motel in Miami’s Brownsville neighborhood instead.

This past Saturday, Hampton House hosted “Round Five: The Knockout,” a conversation with photojournalist Bob Gomel, who frequently photographed Ali, and boxing historian Ramiro Ortiz, moderated by Vanessa Charlot, an award-winning Haitian American photojournalist. The afternoon was spent telling stories of Ali’s character and personality.
