For a discussion about war reporting, VII photographer Ashley Gilbertson will speak with VICE’s Rocco Castoro about his book Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, hosted by the Brooklyn Brewery.

Gilbertson’s book is a collection of images taken over the course of four years in Iraq. The book charts path of Iraq from the post-invasion excitement to the extreme violence that later occurred in the country.

The event will begin at 7:30 pm. Tickets are required to attend and include a free Brooklyn Brewery beer. All proceeds from the events in this series benefit RISC (Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues

The October 30, 2012 talk was followed by a conversation with Tom Engelhardt.

Steve Hindy (Brewery co-founder and former Middle East correspondent): Do you think that the media should show more of what is really happening in war? In the name of good taste, they don't publish anything gory, or anything terribly tragic.

Mike Kamber: We went halfway around the world and invaded somebody else's country, and between 100,000 and half a million Iraqi citizens are dead. It's not about good taste.

What Do Cameras And Combat Have In Common?

"For me it's about the impact of war as it relates on a very basic human everyday life," says New York-based photographer Nina Berman, who has been photographing wounded veterans since 2003. Her image titled "Marine Wedding," made in 2006, captures a moment between Marine Sgt. Ty Ziegel and his bride on their wedding day. Ziegel was seriously wounded by a suicide car bomber in Iraq and spent 19 months in recovery.

"In that moment I saw a shellshocked couple," says Berman. "That is what war does. It disturbs, distresses and changes the normal lovely course of life."

The image itself has had a life of its own, garnering Berman a World Press Photo Award and launching Ziegel into the national spotlight to discuss the failures of veteran care.
Years later, Berman sees the image as less about the couple and more of a symbol of the impact of war.

"I think that people can be taken aback by how [Ziegel] looks," she says, "but there are a lot of people that look like him. He wasn't a freak, an anomaly; that's what this war has done. People who would have died are surviving. That is the reality."

Berman's voice shuddered as she spoke about Ziegel's passing late last year. She says she often wonders: What does it all amount to?

If you strip war of its historical and political context, it seems, what you are left with is simply to wonder: Why has war been a constant throughout human history?

With never-before-seen work from the world's top photographers, Michael Kamber's new book Photojournalists on War: The Untold Stories from Iraq (University of Texas Press) features a groundbreaking visual and oral history of America's nine-year conflict in the Middle East. Influenced by his own experience as a multimedia pioneer, Kamber set out to interview photojournalists from leading news organizations including Agence France-Presse, the Associated Press, the Guardian, the Los Angeles Times, Magnum, Newsweek, The New York Times, Paris Match, Reuters, Time, The Times of London, VII Photo Agency, and The Washington Post. In his book, he recounts their first-person, frontline reports of the war as it unfolded, including key moments such as the battle for Fallujah, the toppling of Saddam's statue, and the Haditha massacre. These hard-hitting accounts and photographs reveal the inside and untold stories behind the headlines in Iraq.

On July 10, Brooklyn Brewery founder and former AP foreign correspondent Steve Hindy will interview Kamber about his career and his mission to create the most comprehensive collection of rare eyewitness accounts of the Iraq War to date. Both men will reflect on the often shocking and sometimes heroic actions that journalists undertake in trying to cover the war, as they discuss the role of media and issues of censorship. The conversation will be followed by a book signing.

Michael Kamber has worked as a writer and photojournalist for 25 years. Since September, he has worked primarily as a conflict photographer, covering a dozen conflicts, including Afghanistan, Somalia, Liberia, Darfur, and the Congo. Kamber worked as The New York Times' chief photographer in Baghdad in 2007, the bloodiest year of the Iraq War. He also covered Iraq for the Times in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. As one of the first journalists to routinely file photography, video and written articles from overseas, Kamber helped pioneer the use of multimedia. Photojournalists on War is the result of a five-year oral history project documenting the role of photojournalism and the Iraq War. Kamber is the founder of the Bronx Documentary Center, and is the recipient of the World Press Photo, and many other awards.

Steve Hindy is a former journalist and became interested in homebrewing while serving as a Beirut-based Middle East Correspondent for The Associated Press. He is a co-founder of The Brooklyn Brewery.

Q: How, and when, did the idea of the WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY exhibit come about?

A: In 2002, the museum acquired the print of Joe Rosenthal’s flag rising on Iwo Jima that is reliably thought to be the first print made from the negative. Rosenthal took it on a Friday, the negatives were sent to the big lab on Guam to be processed and then passed by censors and the man who developed the negative made a print for himself.
Will Michels, a photographer who works for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, came to me to talk about that print. For 10 years before coming to MFAH, Will was the restoration architect on the USS Texas battleship and in talking to World War II vets on the USS Texas during Iwo Jima, they talked about seeing the flag raised.
That discussion led to a small show of conflict photographs that the museum already owned, to more discussions about what we should acquire, and eventually to the decision to do an exhibition on the history of war photography

A Must-Have Book

Last summer, we posted about the forthcoming publication of a groundbreaking new visual and oral history of America’s now ten-year conflict in the Middle East, "Photojournalists on War". The New York Times Lens blog today has featured  the book's introductory essay by Dexter Filkin, with a slide show selection of photographs from the book. Among the 39 photojournalists in the book are Andrea Bruce, Carolyn Cole, Stanley Greene, Tyler Hicks, Chris Hondros, Yuri Kozyrev, Khalid Mohammed and Joao Silva.

The exhibit “Invasion: Diaries and Memories of War in Iraq,” featuring work by Tim McLaughlin, Gary Knight and Peter Maass, opens March 14 at Mr. Kamber’s Bronx Documentary Center.

The Art of War: A Look Back at 10 Important Works That Took on the Conflict in Iraq


Every newspaper and news report has been filled with stories about the "end" of the Iraq War. Artinfo.com has compiled  a list of "what seem to us to be the most notable examples" of art dealing with the war.

Iraq's future remains unclear, but whatever happens, the effects of the war are likely to remain with us for a long time. No work illustrates this more clearly than photographer Nina Berman’s “Marine Wedding" series (memorably seen in the 2009 Whitney Biennial as well as in the recent Dublin Contemporary in Ireland) documenting the marriage of former Marine sergeant Ty Ziegel to his high school sweetheart, Renee Kline. Ziegel was wounded in a suicide bomber’s attack in Iraq, leaving him terribly disfigured. Employing a straightforward and unflinching documentary aesthetic, Berman’s photos show him simply trying to live his life despite his horrible scars, driving his truck, walking his dog, or posing in uniform with his bride — who looks hauntingly lost — for a wedding portrait (the two divorced after a year). Though bordering on the exploitative, Berman’s work offers disturbing testimony to the way the Iraq War has torn through people’s lives, and how its affects are liable to be with us for a long, long time.

For the Record: Searching for Objectivity in Global Conflict

Bombarded by information from a variety of sources, it is often difficult as observers of current affairs to fully make sense of the concepts and facts presented. Artists offer us the opportunity to engage and interpret this information in an alternative way. They were the first compelled to record and present the events of the world. Artists illustrate and record many aspects of war in a variety of ways, whether through genuine factual representation (witness accounts of war) through war reportage drawing and/or documentary work or as artistic interpretation (visual response to war). The artists in For The Record offer a testament of the effects of war and conflict on people, societies and the physical earth.

For the Record Symposium This Weekend, September 30 and Saturday, October 1:

A two-day symposium highlighting the Montserrat Gallery exhibit, "For the Record" will open Friday, Sept. 30 with panel discussions with veterans, talks by artists and writers, a showing of Sebastian Junger's film, "Restrepo" and a keynote address by American art critic, curator and Dean of the Yale School of Art Robert Storr.

The exhibition, curated by Montserrat faculty members artist Rob Roy and social historian and author Gordon Arnold, along with Gallery Director Leonie Bradbury, came in part from a 30-year conversation between the two faculty on the topic of conflict, how it is interpreted, and leaving the viewer to draw their own conclusions.

The symposium activities are free and open to the public, but registration is requested.

She will discuss a selection from nearly 40 international artists who consider the causes and consequences of rubble, its finality and future, moving from decimation and disintegration to the possibilities of regeneration and recovery. Topic: the American experience by Nina Berman a documentary photographer with a primary interest in the American political and social landscape. Topic: Peace and Art, a lecture by arts and culture scholar Steven Dubin, Ph.D. Dubin has written and lectured widely on censorship, controversial exhibitions, the culture wars, popular culture, and mass media. He is interested in the intersection of culture and politics; the evolution of the arts from providing ideological support as well social resistance during South Africa's apartheid era, to becoming a force in building and critiquing democracy. He examines the interplay between the arts, ideology and power; the tension between creative freedom and social control; the arts as a vehicle of expression for otherwise socially marginalized people. Dubin will demonstrate how the visual and performing arts can also critique and thus challenge established social power.

Topic: Arnold will address how art, film, and other modes of cultural production reveal and probe the shape and scope of the overarching ideological system that informs much of contemporary American culture. Gordon Arnold, Ph.D. is an active scholar, writer and social historian who teaches courses in the social sciences and mass media at Montserrat College of Art.

FILM SCREENING Restrepo by Sebastian Junger

Winner of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for documentary, Restrepo chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. The movie focuses on 15 soldiers based at Outpost Restrepo, named after a platoon medic killed early in the deployment. Filmed by author Sebastian Junger and award-winning photographer Tim Hetherington, Restrepo takes viewers on their own 90-minute deployment, without comment or agenda.
Co-director Tim Hetherington, an experienced photojournalist who reported on reported social and political conflict worldwide, was killed in fighting in Libya on April 20, 2011.

Eric Smith has gone in search of Middle America, which he defines as the people living in the nation’s small towns and the less-than-glamorous cities far from the coasts. “Middle America drives our economy, defines popular culture, and fights our wars.” 

Smith isn’t an economist, and he admits that perhaps he’s wrong about the cultural impact of the spending power of small towns. But an Associated Press study has confirmed his belief about their importance to the Iraq war: half of U.S. troops killed in Iraq came from communities with fewer than 25,000 people. And one in five soldiers hails from a town with fewer than 5,000 residents, according to AP.



Smith took a picture at afuneral in a high- school gymnasium in Morley, Mich. “The town’s so small that two towns had to come together to build a high school, but it was standing room only with 500 bikers lined up outside,” he said. “A lot of these kids were football players and popular. They are 18, 19, 20, or 21 — fresh out of high school — so the whole school shows up.”

He insists that without the interest of people who live far from major urban centers, Britney Spears would have been quickly forgotten.

Smith isn’t an economist, and he admits that perhaps he’s wrong about the cultural impact of the spending power of small towns. But an Associated Press study has confirmed his belief about their importance to the Iraq war: half of U.S. troops killed in Iraq came from communities with fewer than 25,000 people. And one in five soldiers hails from a town with fewer than 5,000 residents, according to AP.

In Michigan’s towns Smith witnessed the funerals of U. S. soldiers killed in Iraq; the Rev. Fred Phelps and his congregation from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., who picket the funerals of dead soldiers and hold signs with crude messages expressing their belief that U. S. troops die because an avenging God is angry with America’s tolerance of homosexuality; and thousands of men and women who roar into those towns on Harley-Davidson motorcycles to pay respect to their fallen heroes. The clash of beliefs Smith witnessed at those funerals spurred the photo project In America — The War and Patriotism.

Sidney and Michelle Monroe, owners of Monroe Gallery of Photography, saw Smith’s In America — War & Patriotism and Middle America images during a portfolio review sponsored by the Center for Photography, now known simply as Center. Smith is the first new artist the gallery has agreed to represent in several years, Michelle Monroe said. The Monroes felt his work builds on the humanist traditions of the gallery’s more established artists, such as Berenice Abbott and Gordon Parks. Two of Smith’s photographs are included in Speak Truth to Power, which runs through Sept. 23; more hang in an alcove in back of the main gallery.

While Smith’s Middle America captures moments most Americans will easily recognize as examples of our diversity — a woman installing a National Rifle Association display at the Lenawee County Fair in Adrian, Mich.; the white hearse at Rosa Parks’ funeral in Detroit — War & Patriotism may leave people feeling as if they are looking into a distorted mirror or a parallel universe.

“I started following an organization called the Patriot Guard Riders,” Smith said. “ They are all bikers; most are Vietnam veterans.” About three years ago members of the Patriot Guard Riders started showing up at military funerals to create a barrier between the families and friends of troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and members of the Westboro Baptist Church, who were picketing those funerals with signs that read “America is doomed” and “God hates fags.” Most American Christians might believe that God loves everyone, but Westboro’s Web site posts a 94- page manifesto that calls that belief “ the greatest lie ever told.”

At military funerals, members of the church have greeted mourners with sneers and hateful rhetoric, and that, Smith said, has touched a raw nerve in many Vietnam veterans.

For members of the Patriot Guard Riders, creating a barrier out of flags and their own bodies is cathartic, Smith said. “They do not want these kids treated as they were treated — spit on and harassed. For a lot of these guys, this is a response to the treatment they received more than 30 years ago.” In his photographs, Smith has captured moments when the spit and polish of military honor guards has found common ground with white-haired, bearded, leather-clad bikers.

Westboro Baptist Church members haven’t shown up at the recent military funerals Smith attended, but the Patriot Guard Riders keep coming. “They now claim 100,000 members nationally,” he said of the bikers. “They’ll do whatever the family wants them to do. They’ll form a flag line; they’ll join the procession to the grave. Sometimes they lead that procession.”
Many talk about parallels between the Iraq war and Vietnam: official lies led the nation into both wars, which quickly became quagmires, Smith said, but perhaps the deepest connection is visible during these funerals, as one generation offers another the respect it longed for but never received. “Almost all the funerals I have attended are in small¬town America,” Smith said. “Quite often, not just the Patriot Guard but half the town shows up.”
